Julep Beauty Box
The newest addition to my subscription box family is the Julep box! I’m excited to try out this box. I’ve heard about Julep for a while since they’re one of the more popular beauty subscription boxes. They’re mostly known for their nail polishes, but they make their own makeup and skincare products as well. I’ve even seen some of their products at Ulta, which means they’re a pretty large and successful brand. In this first Julep review, I’ll share my first order experience, coupons, the products that came in my first box, and everything else I found that’s worth sharing!
The Julep website is nice to look at and easy to navigate. I was able to find lots of interesting information on their FAQ page and blog. I found that they offer a “Secret Store” for subscription box members, which is an online pop-up store with limited-time deals on select Julep makeup. This is only open to subscribers during certain times in the month, usually a few days after boxes have shipped. There were some great deals in the secret store, such as $5 mystery nail polish and a bunch of different $13 nail polish trios.
A great thing I found out while searching through their website is that Julep is very supportive of women’s rights. They donate to and work with different foundations that empower women all over the world. This is awesome and makes me support them even more. I love buying from brands that support great causes.
The Julep Maven monthly box contains beauty, skincare, and nail polishes. They offer two tiers of subscriptions. The first, called My Maven, costs $24.99 per month and contains $40+ worth of products. The other option, Maven Luxe, is $39.99 and offers $60+ worth of prestige products. You can also get them a little cheaper if you opt for a longer subscription. My Maven is $19.99 per month for a three-month subscription, and Maven Luxe is $34.99 per month for three months. They don’t say how many products you should expect to come in your box, but I’ve looked through Julep reviews by other customers who say that My Maven boxes generally have three-four products. On the other hand, Maven Luxe boxes have five products.
Similar to some other beauty boxes, you’re able to customize so you’ll get products you’ll enjoy. This is only available between the 20th-24th of each month, so they have time to make changes before they ship out boxes. Julep has different collections of products each month that subscribers can choose from. You start with a box of some of the best Julep products they curate for you and swap items out as desired, so you get to choose everything that comes inside. For April, they offered eight shades of lip sheer and eight nail polish colors in their collection.
Julep Makeup Ingredients
Unlike most other beauty boxes I’ve seen, Julep boxes contain only products from their own brand, so you won’t be getting a bunch of products from random brands you’ve never heard of. Moreover, I was ecstatic to learn that Julep nail polishes are non-toxic. I also learned that their makeup and skincare products are all free of parabens as well as sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfates. This is great because the quality of products will be the same each month, you don’t have to be scared of randomly getting low-quality products. You can also choose if you’d like a box with only nail polish, only skincare and cosmetics products, or a mix of both.
From what I’ve read in many Julep nail polish reviews, I was tempted to choose polish only, but I decided to give their other products a try too. I’m hoping their skincare and makeup holds the same standards (especially skincare, it’s hard to find good products for my combination skin). I’ve looked up a few Julep skincare reviews, and the majority of reviewers recommend it. A lot of people have mentioned that their face moisturizers are among their best products, so I’m hoping to get one of these in my box.
Payment Methods & Coupons
Julep accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and PayPal as payment methods. If you’re hesitant to buy the Julep box before trying their products, you’ll be glad to hear that they’re offering a promotion which grants customers a free Julep box! You just need to pay the $3.99 shipping fee. The code for a free box is ‘JUST4YOU’, which you’ll need to provide at checkout.
Another fantastic coupon they have available is for a free six piece Julep beauty kit worth $100 when you join. The code for this set is ‘ONLOCK’. Unfortunately, you can’t use both coupons I’ve mentioned, so you’ll have to choose between the two. I won’t be able to show off this set when I get my box because I didn’t see the offer until after I purchased my subscription. I’m not sure how long these coupons will last, so make sure to get them while you can!
Julep Nail Polish Controversy
Something I stumbled upon while searching through Julep product reviews was a past incident when they were sued for nearly $3 million. They were apparently using “deceptive marketing tactics” to persuade people to sign up for recurring subscriptions and then making it very difficult to cancel them. The problem affected nearly 55,000 customers. They lured people in with a free first box but didn’t disclose that they were signing up for a recurring product subscription. Luckily, you have this Julep review to inform you.
While this is obviously a red flag for the company, this incident seems to be put in the past, and they’ve paid their restitutions for the mistake. It took place between 2012-2015, so it was a while ago. I’ve still heard great things about their makeup, and it seems like they don’t have suspicious business practices like this anymore. At least I haven’t noticed such practices while checking out reviews on Julep products.
My First Julep Maven Box
Although I subscribed at the end of April, my first box wasn’t delivered until June for some reason. This wasn’t a big deal though since they didn’t charge me for any unnecessary boxes. My box was shipped in a little Julep-branded mailer box with purple stripes on the outside.
Inside, I first found a card that advertised their new lip color shades on one side and a coupon for a free Julep makeup (usually a nail polish) with any $10+ purchase on the other side. This coupon code is ‘SUNNY’. There was also an inspiring quote and information about their Instagram profile.
I received three items in my first box; two nail polishes and one lip mousse. The next few paragraphs will review each product in more detail!
Julep Nail Polish Reviews: Cathy (Boho Glam)
This was my favorite product in the box and one of the best Julep products overall! It’s a cute, pastel yellow shade with a hint of shimmer, but the sparkle isn’t very noticeable since the color itself is so light. I didn’t think I’d like the shade at first, but it looks adorable and summery on my nails.
It took a few coats to get an opaque, even color. However, it dries pretty fast so it doesn’t take forever to paint your nails with this nail polish. I added a clear, protective coat over the top to make it last longer without chipping. I also tried adding a matte topcoat, and it looked nice as well!

Julep Nail Polish Reviews: Roberta (Wonder Maven)
I liked this nail polish shade as well, but not as much as the first one. As seen above, it’s a shimmery turquoise color. This doesn’t remind me of summertime as much, which is what I was hoping for since it’s the beginning of summer. It took a few coats to get the full color, but this is typical with most nail polishes.
Overall, I’m impressed by the quality of these Julep nail polishes. They state that their polishes are intended to make nails stronger and more conditioned after wearing them for a couple weeks. I haven’t worn it long enough to see this result yet, but I’ll keep you posted about it in my future Julep reviews!
It’s Whipped Matte Lip Mousse in Smooch
I have a huge collection of lip products, but I was still excited to try this one out. I once was on a mission to find the best liquid lipstick, so this gave me a chance to try more! I’ve tried shades from Colourpop, Jeffree Star, Kylie Cosmetics, Lime Crime, NYX, and a bunch of other commonly liked brands. Most either dried out my lips too much or didn’t last long at all. Surprisingly, this is one of the best I’ve tried!
Most Julep reviews advertise this product as a weightless, matte lip color that lasts all day. Although I wouldn’t say it lasts all day, it did last a while without being extremely drying! However, any matte product dries lips out to some extent. This one did start to get patchy after a few hours, so I just took it off. This happens with most similar products I’ve tried, and most people just reapply after a couple hours. It’s a little hard to get off, but this is also common with this type of product.
