Ipsy October 2018 Review + Unboxing
If you have trouble finding the perfect beauty products, a subscription box is the way to go. One that I subscribed to a few months ago is Ipsy! They’re one of the most popular, inexpensive options. They provide subscribers with various skincare and makeup samples. Not only that, but they customize products towards your preferences and beauty profile. Plus, their products come in a reusable makeup bag every month!
This Ipsy review shares the products that came in my October glam bag, similar beauty boxes, how to save money on this subscription, and more!
Shipping + Unpackaging
As with my previous Ipsy bags, my October one was shipped in a bright pink bubble mailer. As I mentioned earlier, their products come in a small, reusable makeup bag every month. This month’s bag was red with pretty masquerade mask detailing.
I loved this design! I give away many of my Ipsy makeup bags since I collect so many, but I’ll definitely be keeping this one.
As for the products, I received five sample items (one skincare product and four makeup products). That said, I’ll be reviewing each below.
Yensa Tone Up Primer
Primers are essential for me when wearing foundation and concealer. Without a good one, my face gets extra oily throughout the day and looks terrible. My go-to primer has been from Benefit, but this Yensa primer might just take its spot! It works wonderfully, my foundation stayed put each time I used it. It’s also very lightweight and gives my skin a pretty, subtle glow.
Retail value: $35 for a 1 oz bottle
TheBalm Cosmetics Bronzer in Oliver
I’ve tried a few products from TheBalm and have never been disappointed. Their bronzers are awesome! A little goes a long way, so even small sizes like this last a pretty long time. I loved the shade of this! It was lighter than most bronzers are, so it blended well with my light skin.
Retail value: $17.50 for a full size
IBY Eyeshadow in Dance Party
I don’t typically purchase single eyeshadows because they’re such a chore to carry around, but I still love getting them as samples! This one is from IBY and the shade I got is a dark shimmery green. It’s so dark that you can barely notice the green! I loved the color and, surprisingly, I didn’t have a shade like it. It’s a very high-quality eyeshadow—it’s pigmented and blends well. I was able to create a beautiful look using this product. This was the first item I’ve tried from IBY, and I’m impressed, plus I discovered that they have lots of inexpensive makeup products!
Retail value: $9
Tarte Double Duty Beauty Concealer
I haven’t gotten a concealer in a beauty bag before, so I was looking forward to try this out, especially since it’s from Tarte! They’re one of my favorite brands of makeup.
Sadly, the shade was a little too light for my skin tone. It worked very well for my under eyes, though! With setting spray and primer, it stayed all day without creasing.
Retail value: $27 for a full-size
Wander Beauty Peel-Off Mask
I love trying new masks, and peel-off masks are my favorite. This one was fun to use because it’s bright pink! It’s made with antioxidants such as acai, goji berry, and green tea extracts to brighten skin. After using this, I noticed my skin felt more moisturized and fresh. This was great because many peel-off face masks cause my skin to dry out. It was also very easy to peel off and didn’t harm the skin at all.
Retail value: $34 for a 2.029 oz bottle
Ipsy is already one of the cheapest subscription boxes, so it’s hard to find coupons or deals for them. However, they offer great deals in their shop! You’ll receive cash back for any items you buy in the shop. Many of these are 15% or 20% cash back, which is a great deal. Some go all the way up to 30% cash back! Each product lists the cash back deal and how much it will cost after cash back. They also often have daily and weekly sales on certain products or brands.
Additionally, you can review your Ipsy glam bag and products each month on their website to gather reward points. These add up quickly and can be redeemed for products or even a free month of Ipsy!
You might have already discovered that there are plenty of beauty subscription boxes to choose from. Since there are so many, I’ve included this section to compare similar options if you want to see what else is out there.
For beauty boxes that are similar in price to Ipsy, there are a few more options. One that I subscribe to as well is Birchbox! They provide four or five sample products for $10 each month. As you can see from my Birchbox reviews, they also customize their boxes towards your beauty preferences and have done a great job for me. Sephora Play is another inexpensive ($10/month) option that provides samples of products that are sold at Sephora. This is great if you prefer name-brand products.
In addition, FabFitFun is a seasonal subscription that I love because their box values are amazing! They provide $200+ worth of full-size products for women. My summer and fall FabFitFun boxes were worth over $300! Although it’s more expensive at $50 per box, you can try a trial box for just $20. Plus, the boxes are seasonal rather than monthly, so you wouldn’t be paying a substantial amount each month.
Finally, there are less expensive beauty boxes that still provide a fantastic value of products. Boxycharm, for example, provides five full-size items every month that add up to a $100+ value of products! This costs $21 each month. We show in our Boxycharm reviews that they include many name-brand items, as well as eyeshadow palettes (which seem to last forever)!
