Birchbox September 2018 Review + Unboxing
It can be difficult to discover new beauty products. One of the only ways to try samples is at stores like Sephora while employees hover over you, which can be annoying. With subscription boxes like Birchbox, you can try these samples at home for just $10 monthly! Each box is personalized especially for you.
The September version of our Birchbox reviews series will share this month’s products, similar subscriptions you might enjoy, and savings opportunities to take advantage of!
Shipping + Packaging
As usual, my Birchbox arrived in their bright pink box that says “yes!” on it.
I love their packaging—it always stands out in my mailbox and makes me excited to open it. Inside, I discovered my Birchbox! This month’s box was dark blue with a geometric design over it.
When I opened the box, I discovered six samples, as well as the information sheet about each one. I’ll be sharing each item I received below.
September 2018 Product Reviews
This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray
I’ve seen numerous pillow sprays before that are designed to help you sleep, but I’d never purchased one before. This one smells amazing and did well at relaxing me right before bed.
I was afraid the scent might be heavily perfumed, but I learned it’s made of (mostly) essential oils! This is great for people who are sensitive to heavy fragrance.
Retail value: $29 for a 2.5 oz bottle
Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick
This product isn’t new to me, but I was still ecstatic to see it! It’s one of my favorite liquid lipsticks. It doesn’t dry out my lips, and it stays on really well. I got a light pink shimmer shade, called Patina Shimmer.
Although I prefer some of their other shades, it was nice to try out a new one. It came in a mini size, but there’s still a good amount of product.
Retail value: $22 for a full size (0.08 oz)
Touch In Sol No Poreblem Primer
Although I subscribe to a few different beauty boxes, this was a treat because I don’t get makeup primers that often. This oil-free primer worked really well for my skin, leaving it feeling silky, and it made my makeup last much longer than when I don’t use a primer. This is sold at popular stores like Ulta and Sephora, so I may just have to purchase a full-sized one.
Retail value: $18 for a 1 oz bottle
HUM Nutrition’s Hair Sweet Hair Gummies
This bonus product was pretty unique compared to the products that usually come inside Birchbox. These gummies are made with biotin and other nutrients to improve the health of your hair. I’ve taken biotin supplements before, but never an actual gummy. They were sweet and fun to chew—much better than swallowing a gross, dry pill. Plus, they’re vegan!
In addition to biotin, they also include folic acid, vitamin B12 (which is a necessary nutrient that’s difficult for vegans like me to get), zinc, and more.
Retail value: $25 for a bottle of 60 gummies
Sunday Riley Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment
I love serums, they’re one of the only products that noticeably improve my skin. My face looked much more bright and clear after a few days of using this! Although this product worked well for my skin, the full size is way too spendy. I wish I could afford it so I could see long-term results. Also, the scent is a bit too powerful.
Retail value: $158 for a 1.7 oz bottle
R+Co Park Ave. Blow Out Balm
I can’t believe I just now discovered hair products to use before blow drying hair. They make my hair look amazing! I use this particular product almost daily now. It gives my hair much more volume and bounce than it would normally have. I’m going to be bummed once it runs out, and the full price is a bit pricey for me.
Retail value: $29 for a 5 oz. bottle
Since Birchbox costs just $10 per month, there aren’t too many coupons to save on the monthly subscription. However, you can save money by opting for the yearly term. This would save you $10.
Although there aren’t many opportunities to save money, they usually offer free gifts with new subscriptions. For example, they’re currently offering four different gift sets with a bunch of samples in each for free when you join for six months! You can also get an extra box for free with the three-month subscription by entering the code EXTRAFUN at checkout.
You may be glad to hear that there are numerous boxes like Birchbox! If you’re looking to compare a bunch of different beauty boxes, we have a list that outlines a variety of the best beauty subscription boxes out there.
If you like sample boxes, there are a few boxes that are almost the same as Birchbox but from different companies. Ipsy and Sephora Play are two examples of this. They’re both $10 per month and provide 4–5 beauty and/or skincare samples. Each of these subscriptions customizes your boxes based on what kind of products you want.
The photo on the right is an example from our Ipsy reviews!
On the other hand, there are boxes that provide larger products for a bit of a higher price. For example, Boxycharm costs only $21 monthly and provides 4–5 full-sized beauty products every month. This is a fantastic deal—you can see what brands and products you could receive in our Boxycharm reviews! If this value sounds enticing, the list I mentioned above has many more boxes like this.
