Birchbox May 2018 Review + Unboxing
I recently subscribed to Birchbox, which is an affordable subscription box that provides monthly samples of skincare and beauty products. I figured it would be a perfect way to try out new products! It costs $10 per month for the month-to-month plan. I chose this plan because I’m not sure how long I’ll be keeping this subscription. As I mentioned in my first Birchbox review, I was very happy with my first month’s box back in April. Four out of the five products were items that could be put to use on a daily basis.
Each month, you can select from a curated box, choose one sample with the rest being a surprise, or choose a completely surprise box. You’ll receive a surprise box if you don’t make these selections within the given time frame. I love surprises, so this is the route I chose.
In this review, I’ll be sharing all the products I received in my box and what I think about them!
Shipping & Packaging
I received my box right around the promised delivery time. They also provided tracking information once it had been shipped, which was helpful because I don’t check the mail daily.
Every Birchbox comes with a list of products with their full prices, detailed descriptions, and tips for using them. This list also informs subscribers that they’ll receive 20% off the full size on every sample they receive in the current box! Plus, you’ll get $1 back in credit for every $10 you spend in their store.
On the other side of this sheet is a few useful reminders to stay safe and healthy during summertime!
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle
The Beauty Protector – protect & detangle spray is meant to protect your hair against UV rays and heat styling while acting as a detangling agent as well. It’s also paraben and sulfate-free. I just cut off a bunch of my hair for being so damaged from heat styling and other damaging factors, so it’s perfect timing for me to receive this. Hopefully, it will help prevent future damage to my hair. I like that it doesn’t affect the look of my hair after it’s styled (some heat protection sprays make it feel crunchy and it doesn’t look right in my hair overall).

Love of Color Liquid Shimmer Eyeshadow in Eclipse
I love liquid eyeshadows because they’re not as messy as powder ones, and they don’t shatter if you accidentally drop them. I’m pretty clumsy, so I’ve lost my fair share of makeup due to this problem.
As you can see, this eyeshadow is a beautiful, shimmery bronze shade. Plus, it doesn’t crease! I wore it for an entire day in the California heat with the setting spray I got in my first Birchbox. You can easily make it look either subtle or intense with more layering.

Number 4 Jour d’Automne Sugar Texturizing Spray
This texturizing spray for your hair is meant to create gorgeous, soft, and beachy waves. It’s similar to a sea salt spray but uses sugar instead. This means less drying on your hair. I’ve always adored the way salt sprays make my hair look, but they make it feel too dry and gross. This one still made it feel a little weird (which is normal for a texturizing spray), but it didn’t feel super dry! It didn’t do too much waving, but it still gave my hair a cute beachy feel.

Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum
I’m probably most excited about this product. This serum contains a blend of vitamin C, vitamin E, and other antioxidants. It’s meant to help fade dark spots, tighten pores, and plump skin. Serums like this always make my skin feel fantastic and look great, so I’m excited to have another one. It made my skin look bright and nourished after a single use. I haven’t had the chance to use this product for a good amount of time, so I can’t attest to its ability in fading dark spots. However, I’ve noticed many dark spots fading when I’ve used similar serums regularly.
Even though it’s small, a little goes a long way, so this product should last me a good amount of time! The full sizes of serums like this one are usually super expensive, so I never feel like it’s necessary to buy them.

The Beauty Crop Glow Milk Liquid Highlighter
At first, I thought this was a nail polish because the bottle looked just like one. However, it’s a cute little liquid highlighter! Highlighters are some of my favorite makeup products, and this one is a fine specimen.
I’m glad that it’s liquid because this type always lasts longer on my face and stands out more than powder. It looks a bit dark at first, but it’s gorgeous once it’s blended out. Plus, they add coconut oil in the formula to help your face glow. What’s more, it will moisturize your face at the same time.

Aside from the 20% discount for full-size editions of all the products I received, I came across a few other saving opportunities for new subscribers. Although I didn’t remember to make use of these when subscribing, Birchbox usually offers monthly coupons for a little bonus gift with new subscriptions. These are typically found advertised underneath the subscription options.
I also came across a coupon for an extra box when you buy the 3-month subscription. Finally, you can get $10 off the 6-month subscription. The codes for all the deals I mentioned are pictured above. Although the majority of these deals can be easily found on their website, I will make sure to let you know of any new ones I receive in my updated reviews.
I mentioned this before, but I genuinely appreciate the range of different products they’ve sent me in both boxes rather than just makeup or just skincare. It’s satisfying to know that they listen to your desires because I requested to receive a variation of products. I also included that I would like to receive hair care products and I got two of them this month. That said, Birchbox was definitely worth the price for me, and I look forward to what I’ll get next month!
