Birchbox August 2018 Review + Unboxing
Who doesn’t love trying out new makeup and skincare products? I know I do. With Birchbox, you can try 4–5 new samples every month for the small price of $10 per month! It’s one of my favorite beauty subscription boxes due to the low price and the variety of products I get to test out.
This Birchbox review will share the products I got in my August box, opportunities for free gifts and coupons, and similar beauty subscriptions you might also enjoy.
Shipping + Packaging
As you can also see in my previous Birchbox reviews, their boxes always come in a cute pink shipping box with the word “yes!” on it.
Inside was another box with a pretty sunset design—a perfect match to the summer months.
My products for the month were inside with an additional information sheet about each one. In total, I received five items to try out! I’ll be reviewing and showing each one in further detail below.
Avène Cleanance EXPERT Lotion
I love trying new moisturizers. This lotion has fragrance in it, which might irritate some people’s skin. I still decided to try it out, and it didn’t irritate mine at all. I didn’t notice many improvements either, though. Overall, it didn’t do much for my skin, and I wouldn’t purchase it again.

Love of Color One & Done Shadow Stick
This is my favorite product in this month’s box because I love eyeshadow sticks! They’re so much easier to use than messy, powdered eyeshadows. The only thing I don’t like about them is that they’re large and it’s hard to carry around multiple shades when you’re on the go. Even so, I still prefer them over powder. It’s also full-size, which is pretty rare to get in a Birchbox!
The shade is a pretty, dark nude color. The majority of my eyeshadow looks are nude-based, so I was glad to receive a shade I’ll be able to use often!

OUAI Wave Spray, 5 oz
I’ve seen this product before, hoping to get the chance to try it out. It smells amazing! Even though it’s not made with salt, it still dries my hair out a bit. This is unfortunate because the dryness is my least favorite aspect of sea salt sprays. It did give my hair nice waves though, so I’ll definitely continue using it. I also noticed it made my hair less frizzy than most similar products do.

Vasanti® Makeup Magnet Wipes
While I don’t typically use makeup wipes, this type was interesting to try out! The only negative thing was that the sample sheets are pretty small—it took about three of them for me to wipe off a full face of makeup. They did remove makeup pretty well though!
There are a lot of random ingredients in them, which is a turnoff for me because I don’t know what a lot of them are. I prefer to stick to coconut oil because it’s natural, it works well, and it also hydrates my skin when I remove makeup!

Clarins Water Lip Stain
I love trying out new lip products, especially lip stains because they don’t work out for me most of the time. I enjoy how long they last, but they always tend to dry out my lips. The brush applicator made it a bit difficult to apply this product to my lips. Other than that, it’s is a pretty good product!
I did have to make sure my lips were well moisturized before applying it. As long as my lips weren’t already dry, it didn’t cause them to look any worse. If it were my choice, I would’ve chosen a different shade.

Since Birchbox is one of the cheapest subscription boxes at just $10 per month, there aren’t usually many coupons available. However, there are a few at the moment! There is one deal to get a six-month subscription for $50 rather than $60 by entering the code FREEMONTH at checkout! You can also get a yearly subscription for $96 rather than $110 with the code BIRCHBOX8. They might not last a long time, so be sure to take advantage of them while you can!
They also offer various gifts for new subscribers. For example, they’re currently offering a free Smashbox eyeshadow with all new subscriptions if you use the code GOLDEN at checkout. They also offer a free Stila lipstick trio with a yearly subscription!
The code for this trio is PERFECTKISS. In addition, they offer coupons for orders placed in their store, such as 15% off $35+ with the code TAKE15. There’s also a pop-up to get 15% off your first order when you sign up for the Birchbox email list!
A couple more ways to save a little cash is either with the yearly subscription (you save $10) or by taking advantage of their rewards system! If you gather enough points, you can spend them on full-size products in their shop.
There are plenty of subscription boxes similar to Birchbox. One of these is Ipsy, which costs the same and contains the same amount of sample products as Birchbox. The main difference, which you can see in the photo to the right and in our Ipsy reviews, is that Ipsy provides a cute, reusable makeup bag each month!
If samples aren’t your preference, there are boxes for full-size products as well that aren’t too expensive! For one, Boxycharm is a fantastic option that costs just $21 per month and provides 4–5 full-size products in every box (worth over $100)! Our Boxycharm reviews share previous products and savings opportunities. Julep is another full-size product subscription box that I like—it’s not as good of a deal as Boxycharm, though.
Since there are so many subscription boxes like Birchbox available, we have an additional list dedicated to the best beauty subscription boxes! This list includes more boxes with full-size products, sample products, Korean beauty products, face masks, natural beauty products, and so on.
