You can never have too many beauty products—that’s why I subscribe to all kinds of beauty subscription boxes! With these, I’ve been able to discover many new products that I’ve fallen in love with. One that I’ve been loving is Birchbox, which is an inexpensive beauty box that provides sample products for subscribers to try out. They customize each box to fit your preferences (such as skin type, what type of products you want to receive the most, and more).

Shipping + Unboxing

As usual, this month’s shipment stuck out in the mail with their adorable bright pink box. After unboxing this, my actual Birchbox was inside. This month’s box had a pretty design with a bunch of pink, green, purple, and blue leaves. Although there were leaves, the design didn’t really have fall colors, which I would’ve loved.

Birchbox Reviews - October 2018

Inside, I discovered six products, as well as the information sheet about each item. I’ll be reviewing each below!

Birchbox Reviews - Derma-E Overnight Peel

Product Reviews

Derma-E Overnight Peel

Derma-E is another one of my favorite skincare brands. I received a Vitamin C serum from them in a previous Birchbox, and I loved it so much that I purchased the full size! They have plenty of other skincare products I’ve been itching to try out. This overnight peel was intriguing. It’s made with 5% alpha hydroxy acids, which help exfoliate your skin.

I was worried that this might dry out my skin too much, but it was fine! It did dry it out a tad, but that’s expected with any exfoliating product. I made sure to moisturize after, and my skin felt great.

Schmidt’s Ylang-Ylang + Calendula Soap

I love this brand—I use a natural deodorant from them, which I received in a previous Birchbox, every day. I didn’t know they had soap too! Although they’re not too spendy regularly, I was still excited to see that it’s a full size. I typically prefer liquid soap rather than bar soap, but this has really been growing on me since I started using it.

The wonderful scent is called Ylang-Ylang + Calendula. It smelled strong (in a good way) and amazing. There are also apricot seeds infused into it to help exfoliate your skin. I could smell the soap on my skin after my shower, which is rare! Most scents disappear. I will definitely purchase another one of these once I’m out—I can’t wait to try other scents.

Birchbox Reviews - Sand & Sky Australian Pink ClaySand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Exfoliating Treatment

I adore mud masks. This one is made with clean and natural ingredients, so you don’t have to worry about what you’re putting on your face. I was surprised at how this made my skin look—my pores immediately looked smaller, and my face was brighter. It also made my skin feel smooth. Like most masks, it’s a little bit drying, so it’s important to moisturize after. Although I really liked this product, the price of a full size is far too expensive for my budget.

Retail value: $42 for a 2.1 oz jar

Amika the Kure Repair Shampoo & Conditioner

I’m always open to trying new shampoo and conditioner because I have yet to find the perfect products for my hair. This one is supposed to help restore and prevent damage, which is much needed in my case! Unfortunately, I didn’t notice much difference in my hair after using this product a couple of times. I think I need to wash my hair less so it gets healthier, so I doubt any shampoo or conditioner will help.

Retail value: $22 each for a full size

Lise Watier Intense Waterproof Eyeliner

This eyeliner is nice and smooth. It’s perfect to use with a smoky eyeshadow look! Even though it’s a small size, it will last me a while since I have numerous eyeliners to use up. Plus, it’ll be easy to carry around in my bag. Since it’s waterproof, I can put it on lash lines without it rubbing off!

Savings Opportunities

Since Birchbox is such a cheap subscription box, there aren’t usually deals to save money on your subscription. However, they are currently offering 20% off any subscription with the code TREAT20. This is very rare, so make sure to get it before it expires! You can also always save $10 by purchasing an annual subscription—you just have to pay the full price upfront, and you can’t cancel if you’re unsatisfied.

Although they don’t usually offer money off your subscription, they almost always have free welcome gifts you can take advantage of! These are listed on their website. They also offer plenty of deals in their store. You can also earn points every month by reviewing the items you got, which can be spent in their shop!

Similar Subscriptions

Beauty subscription boxes are one of the most common types of boxes. Since there are so many, it can be hard to decide on the best one to subscribe to. Because of this, I’ll be sharing a couple of popular beauty boxes that are comparable to Birchbox.

Ipsy Reviews 2018

Ipsy and Sephora Play are two options that cost the same price as Birchbox and provide the same amount of sample products. However, with Ipsy, you’ll also receive a reusable makeup bag. My Ipsy reviews show these makeup bags and all the cute designs they’ve had! The difference with Sephora Play is that they only provide products that you can purchase in their store, so you’ll receive many name-brand items.

If you care more about quality and value rather than the cheapest prices, there are other beauty boxes I would recommend. For one, Boxycharm is a fantastic value and only costs $11 more per month compared to Birchbox. Each month, you get 4–5 full-size beauty products that are worth $100 or more! As you can see in my Boxycharm reviews, they even provide many high-end brands.

Julep Review - August 2018

Julep is the final box I’d recommend (even though there are plenty more out there). It costs around $25 per month for their cheapest plan, but it’s well worth it. They provide around three full-sized products from their own brand. Although it’s more expensive, you never have to worry about the quality because it’s always fantastic. Plus, your box is customized, so you receive the type of products you want the most! My Julep reviews detail how you can get your first box for free.

Review Summary
As usual, Birchbox exceeded my expectations. I received multiple products I loved, and the value was great. There was even a full-size item in my box! They also did very well at customizing my box to fit my desires. Overall, it’s a fantastic deal, and this subscription is definitely worth its $10.
