Beauty samples are hard to come by without purchasing them, so I rely on subscription boxes like Birchbox to try out new products. Birchbox is a subscription box that provides 4-5 beauty and skincare product samples every month. You might find an occasional full-size item as well! It’s affordable and fun – every box is like opening a gift.

This Birchbox review shares the unboxing of July’s box, savings opportunities, and similar beauty subscription boxes you might enjoy!

Shipping + Packaging

Like most of my other subscription boxes during July, Birchbox was delayed a bit because I had forgotten to update my payment information when I got a new card. This was easily solved though, and I received my box a few weeks later. It was shipped in the adorable pink box with the Birchbox inside.

Birchbox Review - Box

This month’s box design had a cute, multi-colored cactus print.

The information card on top provided details about each product. In total, I received five products – I’ll be reviewing them one-by-one below.

Birchbox Review - Product Information

 Birchbox Review - Coola Sunscreen

Product Reviews

Coola Classic Moisturizer SPF 30 – Cucumber

I always love trying new moisturizers. I’ve received a few Coola branded products in beauty subscription boxes, but it’s never the same thing, so it’s fun to try this brand out. I’ve liked a lot of their stuff so far! This moisturizer is no exception! It’s pretty light while still moisturizing my dry skin well.

I’m not sure how well this would do in the winter because my skin gets a lot drier, but it’s great for these warmer months! It includes SPF, which is perfect for me because I always forget to wear sunscreen unless it’s incorporated in a product like this.

Birchbox Review - Oribe Matte Waves Lotion

Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion

I wish my hair had gorgeous, beachy waves with no effort. I’m not one of the lucky people who have this privilege, so I rely on hair products like this and damaging heat tools. I’ve been in search of the perfect product to give me beautiful waves, so I don’t have to use heat and damage my hair.

First off, the smell of this product is amazing. It gives a pretty, sea salt waves look – like I just came from the beach. I really liked this look! It does make my hair look a little frizzy, but I have yet to find a waving product that doesn’t. This one gives way less frizz than others I’ve tried. It’s also free of parabens and sulfates!

Retail value: $42 for a 3.4 fl oz

MakeupDrop Original

I adore the concept of this product. Beauty sponges gross me out unless I only use them once or twice. Sponges soak up so much bacteria and yucky stuff you don’t want on your face. Yes, they can be cleaned, but how well?

Birchbox Review - MakeupDrop

This MakeupDrop applicator is made of silicon, so anything you put on it will rinse right off after! I got one in another beauty box to try out, and I loved it, so I was ecstatic to see another in my Birchbox.

You can use this to apply any product – even skin care! This one is much smaller than the other one I have, so it’d be best for concealer or other makeup that covers small areas. It doesn’t soak up anything as a sponge does, so you have to be more careful about how much you put on the applicator.

Retail value: $20 for the full-size

Dr. Jart+ Cicpair Tiger Grass Camo Drops

Out of all the items in my box, I was most excited about this one. I’m always on the hunt for an amazing serum, and other products I’ve tried from the Dr. Jart brand have been fantastic. That said, I had high hopes for this product, and it lived up to them!

Birchbox Review - Cicapair Tiger Grass Camo Drops

I’ve always had trouble with redness on my face, and this seemed to alleviate it noticeably. It also didn’t dry me out, which is a common problem with serums. My skin seems to glow after putting a little of this serum on. I’m going to be devastated when it runs out because I don’t think I’d shell out $50 for a bottle.

Retail value: $46 for a 1 oz bottle at Sephora

Birchbox Review - Eyeko Brow Liner

Eyeko Brow Liner

I mentioned in another review that I receive a lot of Eyeko products in beauty subscription boxes. These have always been liquid eyeliners though – I was surprised to find this brow liner! I’ve never tried a liquid brow product. My first worry was that it wouldn’t be the right shade because I have a lot of difficulties finding brow pencils or other products to match my dark brown eyebrow color. This one was the perfect shade though! The liquid was a little difficult to get used to, but I was able to make it look pretty natural. I think I’ll stick to my brow pencils, but this was a fun product to test out.

Savings Opportunities

Birchbox is already one of the cheapest subscription boxes at just $10 per month. Because of this, there aren’t too many savings opportunities available. However, they usually offer gifts to new subscribers! For example, they’re currently offering a free bonus box with any 3-month prepaid membership. You can use the promo code EXTRAFUN to get this deal. They also offer a free full-size MAC lipstick with 3-month subscriptions as well. The code for this is CROSSWIRES.

A couple more ways to save a little cash is either with the yearly subscription (you save $10) or by taking advantage of their rewards system! If you gather enough points, you can spend them in their shop.

Ipsy Reviews 2018

Similar Subscriptions

One subscription box like Birchbox is Ipsy, which costs the same and contains the same amount of sample products as Birchbox. The main difference that you can see in our Ipsy reviews is that they provide a reusable makeup bag each month!

If samples aren’t your favorite type of products, you’ll be glad to hear there are boxes for full-size products as well that aren’t too expensive! For one, Boxycharm is a fantastic option that costs just $21 per month and provides 4-5 full-size products in every box (worth over $100)! Our Boxycharm reviews share previous products and savings opportunities. Julep is another full-size product subscription box that I like – it’s not as good of a deal as Boxycharm though.

Birchbox Review - Boxycharm vs. Birchbox

Since there are so many subscription boxes like Birchbox available, we have a separate list dedicated to the best beauty subscription boxes! This list includes more boxes with full-size products, sample products, Korean beauty products, face masks, natural beauty products, and so on.

Bottom Line
Overall, I was glad I got to try out these July Birchbox products. I had a great experience with most of the items, and I’m looking forward to the products I’ll discover next month! Is Birchbox worth it? I think so! The products I got this month were worth more than the small monthly fee I pay. Not only that, but there are many products that I enjoy and have repurchased after trying them in Birchbox.
